Polymers, viscosifer

The use of fluid is of great importance in drilling operation.
The choice of the right kind of fluid and therefore of the appropriate additives required for its preparation, may be a determining factor for the final performance and results.
The following questions should be asked in order to performance chemical is required.

  1. what kind of job must be undertaken (piling, waterwells, boring)
  2. what kind of tools are being used (down-the-hole hammer, rock bit, Bucket, etc.)
  3. what kind of formations are to be drilled (consolidated, unconsolidated, active)

MUD FLUSH DRILLING

Substantially the preparation of drilling mud is made adding to water polymeric substances that give the mud a viscosity value thus increasing the solid transportation capacity.
It forms a panel on hole walls and gives other fundamental performances necessary to achieve hole drilling results.

PRODUCTS SPECIFICATION

DRILLAM PA REGULAR
High viscosity polyanionic polymer used as viscosifier, fluid loss reducer and shale inhibitor in fresh and salt water muds. Its employment keeps fluid loss low and forms a thin imperious filter cake that prevents water from penetrating water sensitive formation.

Appearance: white free flowing powder
Packaging: 25 kg. bags

CARBOCEL AG/EHV (extra high viscosity)
Based on carboxi-methi-cellulose (CMC), used as viscosifer and fluid loss reducer of bentonite base mud. Carbocel EHV can be used to substitute part of bentonite to 1/6 (10 kg. instead of 60 kg/cM), biodegradable, does not damage the formations.

Appearance: whitish powder
Packaging: 25 kg. bags

LAMGUM 100
Natural organic polymer, by product of guar gum. Used as primary viscosifier in water well drilling, it produce a viscous pseudoplastic solution in either fresh or salty water, giving good hole stability and improving cutting carrying capacity.

BIOLAM P
Biodegradable poly-saccharide polymer that acts as a primary viscosifier and has exceptional shear thinning properties

Appearance: pale yellow powder

LAMVIS S100
Synthetic polymer in small grains (<= 1 mm.), viscosifier also at very low concentrations (with 0,5 Kg./Mc a Marsh viscosity value of 55 sec. is obtained).
Good stabilization effect in alterate and incoherent formations.
Effective in clay encapsulating.

Appearance: granular white powder

LAMSEAL G
Organic polymer, not-water soluble, in grains, high water absorption capacity from 50 to 200 times its weight.
This effect of water absorption permits the swelling of grains from 0,5 ÷ 3.15 mm. to some centimeters.
It is used when loss of circulation occurs, the polymer grains swell inside fractures and formation voids preventing fluid loss.

Appearance: White grains (0,5 ÷ 3,15 mm.)

DRILLAM NT
Liquid polymer used as viscosifier, shale stabilizer and fluid loss reducer.
Prevents shale sloughing, encapsulates the cuttings.

Anionic liquid polymer, designed as viscosifier in water based drilling fluid, shale stabilizer, prevents shale sloughing and encapsulates the cuttings, good string lubrication.

Foaming agent

The use of specifically ideated products for air drilling offers the following advantages:

  • reduction of friction;
  • longer life to your drilling tools;
  • increased cleaning of the hole;
  • cut in compressed air delivery (energy saving and longer life for your pump and/or compressor).

Foam is normally used in air drilling, and is made by employing:

  • a foaming agent (for light, consolidated, fractured formations and also to control dust and chips);
  • a foaming agent mixed with a viscosifier (Stiff-Foam), that is used to recover big and heavy cuttings in deep hole drilling and to absorb either fresh or salt water present in the formation.

FOAMEX R
Biodegradable foaming agent, used in stiff foam and mud misting operations. Useful in drilling unstable formations, reduces sticking tendency of wet clays.

Appearance: clear solution

FOAMEX TS
Highly concentrated foaming agent, used mainly with salty water, particularly indicated for stiff foam and mud misting operations. Produces high quality foam in a wide range of varying drilling conditions.

FOAMEX TX
Produces high quality foam also in low concentration, very effective in hard waters, indicated to be used at low environmental temperature.

It is a liquid defoaming agent, at lowest reccommended dosages (0.3 ÷ 1.5 kg./cM) it will be effective in a wide range of pH and temperatures.

SPECIAL PRODUCTS

Pipe freeing agent
PRESANTIL

PRESANTIL is a special blend of surfactants used to formulate spotting fluids for freeing stuck pipes.
It is mainly used in unweighted spotting fluid. PRESANTIL breaks down the cake which is forced to dehydrate and the oil can penetrate between the porous formations and the drill string. The lubricants and the oil wetting agent contained in PRESANTIL enable the pipe to be freed.

TREATMENT
The quantity of PRESANTIL to be used with diesel oil is usally 3-5% but could be higher (up to 10%) in difficult situations.

Special additives

Cake dispersant
REOTAN L

REOTAN L is a synthetic polyelectrolite used in oil and water wells as a dispersant of the cakes made by bentonite or polymeric products used to make-up the drilling fluid. Its principal role is to break-up the cake completely, cleaning the formation thoroughly, thus allowing maximum well productivity.
After using REOTAN L in water wells, it is advisable to wash the well with fresh water in order to remove possible residues of the product.

TREATMENT
The quantity of REOTAN L to be used in water is between 0,1 - 0,6%. Leave product inside well, at the productive stratus, for about 6-8 hours.

String lubricant
LUBRICANT F/16

LUBRICANT F/16 is a non toxic lubricant used in water based drilling fluid.
Advantages obtained using LUBRICANT F/16 are:

  • lubricity coefficient reduction
  • torque and friction reduction
  • prevents pipe key seating
  • increases penetration rate

LUBRICANT F/16 is very stable in high temperatures, it is also used in geothermal drilling.

TREATMENT
Mud composition will suggest the concentration required. Weighted and/or high solid muds will require a higher concentration of LUBRICANT F/16 than unweighted system.
The following guideline may be considered:

  • To reduce friction and torque— 5/50 l/cM
  • To free stuck pipe— 150-200 l/cM

Dispersant
LAMSPERSE HS

LAMSPERSE HS is a water soluble chrome free dispersant.

LAMSPERSE HS offers the following advantages:

  • It is free of heavy toxic metals such as chrome;
  • It is immediately soluble in the drilling fluid;
  • It does not cause any foaming, specially in salty muds;
  • It is more effective, thus requires less handling.

To prepareTernarie "Bentonite-Cement" mixture, the LAMSPERSE HS added to solution before cement acts as bentonite dispersant and anti-flocculant.

TREATMENT
LAMSPERSE HS is used from 1/4 of the lignite dosage. Suggested dosage is between 0,5 and 3,0 kg/cM.

Bactericide
CARBOSAN 135/TR

It is a a concentrated biocide in liquid form used to control aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in drilling and completion fluids.
Carbosan 125/TR is completely soluble in water and has a very low toxicity.

TREATMENT
Dosage if 0,3 ÷ 1,2 Kg./cM is sufficient to ensure a complete kill situation.

Bentonite pellets


Clay layers, which were deposited by seas and rivers millions of years ago, form a natural almost waterproof barrier preventing possible pollution. They form, therefore, the ideal protection, created by nature itself, of the water containing layers. However in case of excavation and water well drilling, these clay layers are disturbed, causing possible leakages of pollutant in the water reservoir. To restore the clay layers, "Bentonite Sealing Pellets" are employed, having the following characteristics:

  • high sealing property
  • swelling capacity
  • sinking speed
  • swelling strength
  • chemical and mineralogical reliability
  • simple application
  • dust-free application

Uses of "Bentonite Pellets":

  • sealing drilled clay layers
  • sealing loss of circulation in water well drilling
  • filling up drill holes for seismic research and piezometer
  • mineral closure of wells and excavations (ex. waste pits)

SEALING PELLETS


Thanks to the underground impermeable clay layers, pollution cannot directly reach clean aquifers


Filling up the space between tube and borehole wall with permeable material will cause a leakage between aquifers


Restoring the drilled through layers with materials of a permeability equal to the surrounding will prevent leakage


After swelling of the sealing material, the clay layer will have its original impermeability again
